What will come next
from talking on the cell
to writing a text

Shouldn’t we, as adults,
be good role models
How is it possible
if we’re acting like rebels

Distractions come
in different shapes
but taking eyes off the road
may not lead to escapes

So, if you can’t refrain
for your own safety’s sake
then do it for your neighbor
in the surrounding lanes

My son is in Leadership (Student Council) at his high school,
and recently they conducted a week long event,
conveying the dangers of texting and driving.
They had a guest speaker who had lost his high school daughter
because she texted while driving on the freeway.
Although I don’t text and drive, this alone
is enough to scare me. Whether we’re texting
or reading a text, we create a dangerous situation by doing so.
I thought I would help pass this very important message along.

  1. Lauren this has been a subject of much discussion in our house. There is a substantial fine here for using your cell phone or texting. But this has not been a deterrent. The numbers of tickets handed out here have increased 30 percent from last year. A few days ago we narrowly avoided a head on collision on our country road (by driving into the ditch). The driver was texting.

    1. Sadly, tickets don’t seem to make a difference when it comes to texting or talking on the cell. I also see many people blatantly holding their cell in plain view and I know if it were me, I’d get pulled over in a heartbeat. I’m so glad you both avoided the accident…we can only hope this message will spread and people will learn. Thanks for your comment, Virginia!

  2. My children have buried a handful of friends from this foolishness. Still, I see it everyday. “It will never happen to me” is the common refrain. “I can handle it.” Frightening.

  3. Love the poem, and its something that is very major and important. So many young one’s are losing their life from texting and driving. Thank you for sharing this lovely post. God Bless 🙂

    To stop texting on the go
    A gadget that shrills
    Just like open doors
    That’ll stop the morons
    Why is this not on!

    It is so scary and sad that people are willing to risk lives but not follow simple road rules
    texting, drinking, not following the signs
    While driving have taken so many lives
    All of us have seen it yet when it comes to implementing few actually care
    Thought provoking powerful poetry

    1. Thanks so much, Wendell, and both my son and daughter are pretty adamant about not texting, while driving, as well as, drinking and drugs. We got lucky, somehow, but when they’re out driving, I pray a lot!

Thanks, Christine, and I agree…even with hands-free, it is the conversation that is focused on, rather than the road..I pull over if I need to text or talk to my family or anyone, because I can’t do both and put 100% into each action. Thank you so much, I wrote this in 5 minutes and didn’t care about the end result, but more of the message…HBL ♥

    But I ask you. What is the fear of being a rebel? Would not such an approach lead to new possibilities and paths?

    1. I’m glad this resonated with you, Shakti, and while your question could ring true in some causes, in this case, adults should set good examples for the younger generation. Being a rebel and not following the rules when it comes to texting and driving can only result in tragedy. The word “rebel” is not meant to be taken so literally; only with this issue in my poem. Our youth look up to us, they do as we do, and if our actions don’t convey safety, then I believe, we, as adults, are in the wrong… Thanks so much for your visit and comment…

  14. As is seen too often, vehicles are dangerous weapons – drinking and driving is another issue that in my area has killed too many young and old in the past year alone. Too much of the attitude that ‘I am alright – I can handle it.’ ‘Pay attention’ is just a good adage to think of in most situations and on many levels. XO
